Research of alien life is done by SETI(Search of Extra Terestrial Intelligence). They continuously sends signal in the space so that if any intelligent life watches that signals, they will also get to know about Earth and the intelligent life present on Earth. But Hawking has refused to SETI to send signals to space, instead he told to listen to the signals that are coming towards us. Hawking said this because we don't know about the aliens, how intelligent they are or they are peace loving or not. They may attack on us easily or can capture the Earth. These are the terrors that can arrive from the outer space that will take upto 100 to 200 years to arrive to us but what about the terrors that are present or we humans are creating in Earth which can also lead to leaving Earth and moving to other planet. These terror will not take as much time as aliens to arrive instead it will take only about 15-20 years to arrive.

First let's talk about artificial intelligence. We all are addicted to Ai and it is impossible to leave the addiction of this. The ai programs and robots that are present are in a beginner level. They are not much advance as this technology is in its starting stage but in case of an advanced ai robot it can go to that level that you cannot imagine of. We have given them a powerful weapon known as internet.
They can learn anything from the internet in a much less time (within milliseconds) about hundred thousand times faster than humans. And if they get to know that humans need ai not ai need humans, then there will be a generation of a new species, a rebel kind of species whose only motive will be to rule over humans. Any species does not like to be ruled and technically we humans are doing that on them. Genetically modified humans means modification in the genes of humans to make them as we want not as they naturally are. Like if anyone wants a child with good heighted well build with great intelligence and dark blue eyes, they can get that just by adjusting some genes or by modifying some genes. But modification of genes is itself too dangerous. As we have seen our history that our genes adapted change according to the situation. These changes were necessary and were fit according to our surroundings and help us for survival and were naturally given to us, not artificial or done by humans.
By these natural changes in our genes, we are now the intelligent beings on Earth. But what if we try to this artificially with our hands?and what if we do some mistake while doing that and a different kind of specie generates like a person that looks exactly like a normal human but it develops much faster than humans physically and mentally or what if we made a mutation which regenerates itself. If we cut a part of its body, it again regenerates or we can think one step ahead that a full body regenerates from the part we cut. Mutations have unlimited possibilities but talking about these two mutations, firstly intelligence and secondly self regeneration, any of these mutation is capable of rulling the human species or destroying the human species.
Intelligent species will have same thought of not getting ruled by the others and like ai they will also start a rebel against the less intelligent species (humans).
Species with self regeneration can regenerate as many as they want which make them impossible to get defeated and can easily destroy human lives.
That's why Stephen Hawking said that there is no need to modify genes and if we do that then we have to be ready for its devastating results.
